Must the patches always be placed on the back?

The back is the preferred site, but if this area of the body has extensive dermatitis or additional surface area is needed, it is acceptable to place the patches on other sites, such as the arms, flanks, lateral abdomen, medial and lateral thighs.

Is it possible to test patients who are treated with topical corticosteroids?

Do not apply haptens on patients recently treated with topical corticosteroids; wait at least 1 week after treatment.

Besides corticosteroids, are their other medications that may interfere with patch testing?

The only medications that may affect results are drugs which suppress the immune system. Although ideally patients would be off of their immunosuppressive medications for a few days prior to and during the week of patch testing, in practice this is sometimes not possible. If the patient is still experiencing their dermatitis while on their immunosuppressive medications, then their skin immune system is capable of responding to the patches and giving a useful result.

How much does a syringe/bottle contain?

A syringe contains 5 ml of hapten preparation and a bottle contains 8 ml.

How many patients can be tested per syringe/bottle?

Approximately 125 – 150 patients/syringe and bottle.

Which volume should I dispense onto each patch test chamber?

The recommended dose is 25 μl. When applying haptens in petrolatum, dispense a 5 mm string into the IQ Patch Test Chamber (this corresponds to approximately 25 μl or 20 mg). For liquid haptens, the same amount (20-25 μl) is produced by applying a single drop.

How long can I store a preloaded Patch Test Unit?

Non-volatile haptens can be preloaded for up to two weeks. Preloaded Patch Tests Units must be stored refrigerated in air tight bags.

Volatile substances (acrylates and fragrances) and liquid haptens must not be preloaded, they should be loaded on the day of application to skin.

Is there any way to improve adhesion of the Patch Test Units?

Yes. Make sure to always put pressure on the applied test unit with the palm of your hand for at least 5 seconds. The heat and pressure will promote better adhesion.

In cases where the skin condition affects adhesion (e.g. oily skin), additional taping can be considered.

How long is the shelf life of the haptens?

The shelf life is generally between 12-30 months for petrolatum based haptens, and 6-12 months for haptens based on aqua or ethanol. The expiration date is clearly marked on the label of each hapten.

Is there a special procedure to dispose of expired haptens?

Haptens are classified as pharmaceuticals and therefore expired units should be handled as per your organization’s procedure for handling expired drugs.
